Es lässt sich auf mancherlei Weise erklären, was Meditation ist, was sie bewirkt, wie sie funktioniert. Mit Meditation, sagen manche, lässt sich der Entspannungsreflex auslösen. Meditation, sagen andere, schult das bewusste Gewahrsein; sie ist eine Methode der Ausrichtung und Zentrierung des ich; sie hält das endlose verbale Denken an und entspannt Körper und Geist; sie beruhigt das Zentralnervensystem; sie mindert Stress, verleiht Selbstwertgefühl, verringert Angst und lindert Depressionen.

All das trifft zu und wurde klinisch bestätigt. Ich möchte aber hervorheben, dass Meditation an sich eine spirituelle Praxis ist und immer war. Sie mag christlich, buddhistisch, hinduistisch, taoistisch oder muslimisch sein - immer ist sie der Weg der Seele nach innen, wo sie schliesslich ihr Einssein mit dem Göttlichen findet. »Das Reich Gottes ist in euch« - und Meditation ist von ihren Ursprüngen an stets der Königsweg zu diesem Reich gewesen.  Was auch immer die Meditation also zu leisten vermag, sie ist zuerst und vor allem die Suche nach dem inneren Gott.

Ich würde sagen, dass Meditation spirituell, aber nicht unbedingt religiös ist. Spiritualität hat mit tatsachlicher Erfahrung zu tun, nicht mit blossen Glaubensinhalten; mit Gott als dem Grund des Seins, nicht mit einer kosmischen Vaterfigur; mit dem Erwachen zum wahren Selbst, nicht mit Gebeten für das kleine ich; mit Bewusstseinsschulung, nicht mit weihevollem Moralisieren über Unzucht und Völlerei; mit dem Geist, der in jedem Herzen zu finden ist, nicht mit irgend etwas, das in dieser oder jener Kirche getan wird. Kurzum, Meditation ist spirituell.

Das heisst auch, dass Meditation nicht dieser oder jener Religion zuzurechnen ist, sondern Bestandteil einer universalen spirituellen Kultur der Menschheit ist - ein Bemühen, Gewahrsein in alle Aspekte des Lebens zu bringen. Sie ist, anders gesagt, Teil dessen, was man philosophia perennis nennt, die »immerwährende Philosophie«.

Cos'è la meditazione.

È possibile spiegare in vari modi cosa sia la meditazione, come agisca e funzioni. Secondo alcuni, con la meditazione è possibile innescare il meccanismo di autorilassamento. La meditazione, a detta di altri, allena la consapevolezza cosciente; è un metodo di allineamento e centramento dell'Io; ferma il pensiero verbale infinito e rilassa il corpo e lo spirito; calma il sistema nervoso centrale; riduce lo stress, dà autostima, riduce l'ansia e la depressione.
Tutto ciò corrisponde a verità ed è stato confermato clinicamente. Vorrei però sottolineare che la meditazione è ed è sempre stata di per sé una pratica spirituale. Potrebbe essere considerata cristiana, buddista, induista, taoista o musulmana, ma è in ogni caso un cammino dell'anima verso la sua profondità, dove diventa una cosa sola con il divino. "Il Regno di Dio è dentro di voi" - e la meditazione è stata fin dalle sue origini la strada maestra verso questo regno. Qualunque cosa sia in grado di fare la meditazione, essa rappresenta innanzitutto e soprattutto la ricerca del Dio interiore.
Direi che la meditazione è spirituale e non necessariamente religiosa. La spiritualità ha a che fare con l'esperienza pratica, non con meri contenuti di fede; con Dio come fondamento dell'essere, non con una figura di padre cosmico; con il risveglio al vero Sé, non con le preghiere per il piccolo io; con l'educazione alla consapevolezza, non con il solenne moralismo sulla lascivia e la fornicazione; con lo spirito che deve essere trovato in ogni cuore, non con tutto quello che viene fatto in questa e in quella chiesa.
Questo significa anche che la meditazione non deve essere annoverata a questa o a quella religione, ma è parte di una cultura universale spirituale dell'umanità - significa farsi portatori di un impegno, una consapevolezza in tutti gli aspetti della vita. Si tratta, in altre parole, di una parte di quella che viene detta philosophia perennis, la "filosofia perenne".
 

Perchè la meditazione è utile
anche nel recupero e riabilitazione dalle tossicomanie.

La meditazione ci permette di sperimentare in maniera del tutto naturale, senza medicamenti, uno stato di profonda calma. Una persona che ha problemi ha sempre di sicuro anche una mente irrequieta. Se medita mattina e sera ha perlomeno due volte al giorno "vacanze" dalla sua mente agitata. Questa calma naturale gli permette di acquisire distanza di fronte ai suoi problemi. I problemi si mutano in compiti. Con una mente più calma si diventa più capaci di gestire le proprie emozioni e si diventa più abili nell'affrontare i propri compiti. Questo dà una maniera completamente nuova di sperimentarsi, da cui nasce una crescente sicurezza di se. Il proprio indirizzo interiore è trovato. Si apprende attraverso l'esperienza che forza, amore e gioia sono fondate nel proprio spazio interiore. Quest'indirizzo interiore non lo può togliere più nessuno. Ogni volta che finiamo in difficoltà abbiamo il metodo, il punto di partenza per riportare la nostra vita in equilibrio.

Warum Meditation auch in der Suchthilfe nützlich ist.

Meditation lässt uns ganz natürlich einen Zustand tiefer Ruhe erfahren. Ein Mensch der Probleme hat, hat sicher auch immer einen unruhigen Geist. Die Meditation gibt ihm die natürliche medikamentenfreie Erfahrung tiefer Ruhe.
Wenn er morgens und abends meditiert, hat er wenigstens zweimal täglich "Ferien" von seinem unruhigen Geist. Diese natürliche Ruhe ermöglicht es ihm, Distanz gegenüber seinen Problemen zu gewinnen. Die Probleme wandeln sich in Aufgaben. Mit einem ruhigeren Geist ist man fähiger mit den eigenen Emotionen umzugehen und man wird fähiger, seine Aufgaben in Angriff zu nehmen. Man lernt durch Erfahrung, dass Liebe und Glück im eigenen inneren Raum begründet sind. Diese innere Adresse kann einem niemand mehr nehmen. Wann immer wir in Schwierigkeiten geraten, haben wir die Methode, den Ausgangspunkt, unser Leben wieder ins Gleichgewicht zu bringen.
